What You Should Know About Routers This Year

All about Modems and Routers

If you want to get your home computer or mobile devices connected to the internet, the modem and router are the two important components of the system. With a modem you can communicate with your internet service provider. A cable modem connects to your cable provider through a coaxial cable. A DSL modem is connected to your telephone line. The ISP’s infrastructure capability is where your model will necessarily depend on. It could also be fiber or satellite.

If you have a router then you are able to share internet connection with other devices in your home or office. A wireless router creates a Wi-Fi network that devices can connect to. If there are Ethernet cables, there are also routers which has ports for these. The router connects devices to the internet through the modem. The router is the recipient and owner of a single IP address on the internet which servers on the net can connect to.

Firewalls or protective barricades against the internet come with routers. With the router firewall, it gives protection in hardware format, in addition to the software firewall found in your computer.

ADSL devices combine both router and modem in one piece of equipment.

All modem-router combo brands basically work the same way although there are basic differences in the cosmetics or design of the devices.

There is a wide range of modem-router combos to choose from and prices vary from less than fifty dollars up to a few hundred.

If your internet is provided through cable network, then the modem is a standard one called DOCSIS 3.0 which is the latest format across all brands. For those with DSL connection, if your speed is great than 15 Mbps, the you would go for a VDSL connection and an ADSL connection for lesser speeds.

It is easier to choose a router. Routers use two types of technology. The fast AC which has beam forming technology, directs a beam at your device instead of the radius wifi technology. This type of technology works well with both new and old devices. The range of speed are from 100 Mbps to 5300 Mbps.

A modem router bought on your own is much better than the low renal you pay for the modem router provided by your service provider. It is worth spending a few hundred dollars for a great difference in internet speed.

It is better to have one unit that serves both functions of modem and router, a combo, in other words, than getting a separate modem and router. In this modem router combo you can use different brands together, and to get the most of it you should get all the features of the best modem and the best router for your system.
